Interactions between long-term hostages and their hostages takers is under theorized in criminology. Dr. Gilmer and Dr. Dewey explore testimonials by former Somali piracy hostages to better understand how hostages experience captivity aboard vessels anchored off the coast of Somalia. Their findings reveal that ‘death’ is experienced by hostages as a state of being, an ever present threat, and a disciplinary force.
