Dr. Ariane Prohaska’s Research on Tuscaloosa’s Tornado Recovery Appears in the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters

Dr. Ariane Prohaska and co-author and CCJ alumna Kaci Smart examined how social vulnerability to disaster continued into the recovery phase following Tuscaloosa’s 2011 tornado. Data indicate that the majority of replacement housing has been high-end apartments for college students rather than residential construction to house local families. Prohaska and Smart discuss the consequences of this reconstruction and propose suggestions to reduce vulnerability in the rebuilding process for other cities in the aftermath of disasters.

Their research appears in the March 2017 issue of The International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters.
